The distinguishing features of the Spade included a large and remote-controlled passenger-side sliding door, a low floor, and a rear door on the driver's side that facilitated access to the rear seats. Two-wheel-drive models also featured a flat floor to make it easier for passengers to enter and exit the vehicle. To reduce obstruction of the driver's view, the driver-side door mirror was mounted to the door panel, and slim front A-pillars were adopted. With a touch of playfulness, a scale was marked on the left B-pillar for measuring children's height.
The 1NR-FE engine fitted with the Dual VVT-i system was adopted for 1.3-liter models. The improved 1NZ-FE engine coupled with Super CVT-i was used for 1.5-liter models, attaining a smooth ride with shock-free gear shifting and low fuel consumption. As a result, the 1.5-liter 2-wheel-drive model with idling-stop feature attained a fuel efficiency of 20.6 km/l under the JC08 test cycle.
With the launch of the Spade through the Corolla and Netz sales channels, all four of Toyota sales channels came to carry compact minivans.
