Production plants, which play the core role in monozukuri (conscientious manufacturing), undertake production while paying great attention to quality to prevent the releasing of any defective parts, cost reduction to manufacture products as inexpensively as possible, and safety to ensure that no accidents occur. Plants are also responding to changing market conditions such as the low birth rate, aging population and maturation of the market in Japan, and globalization of the industry.

Recently, Toyota Motor Corporation has provided support to mother plants established overseas since the late 1980s in response to globalization, implemented cost reduction measures as a part of the Break Through Toyota (BT2) program launched in 2002, consolidated dispersed production plants to improve efficiency, and implemented simplification and streamlining of facilities and processes to be able to compete against countries with low production costs.

Employment of female technicians at plants was increased following amendment of the Equal Employment Opportunity Law in 1985 and the easing of restrictions on the employment of women. Also, the Toyota Skill Development System was introduced in February 1991 to expand the scope of technicians' work, and the afternoon/night two shift system (first shift from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., second shift from 9.00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) introduced in 1962 was changed to a continuous two shift system (first shift from 6:25 a.m. to 3:05 p.m., second shift from 4:00 p.m. to 12:40 a.m.).

Environmental initiatives undertaken as plant activities include the acquisition of external ISO 14001 certification commencing in 1996 and the achievement of zero land fill waste* since 1999.
