The second-generation Avensis, which was released in Europe in March 2003, made its debut in Japan in October. The 4-door sedan and station wagon versions were positioned as successors to the Vista and the Vista Ardeo, respectively. The engine was an inline 4-cylinder, DOHC 16-valve VVT-i D-4 direct injection type unit (1AZ-FSE) with a displacement of 2 liters and an output of 114 kW (155 PS). Customers could choose between a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FF) model and a flex full-time 4-wheel-drive model. Both had a 4-speed ECT automatic transmission, although the FF model used a sequential shift mechanism. The fact that the Avensis was awarded a five-star crash test safety rating by Euro NCAP was also a major plus in marketing. In September 2005, a 2,362 cc D-4 direct injection engine (2AZ-FSE) with an enhanced output of 120 kW (163 PS) was newly adopted, together with an advanced 5-speed Super ECT transmission.
