Introduced in Japan in September 1991 as a luxury front-engine, front-wheel-drive sedan, the Windom was the modified version of the second-generation Lexus ES that had been marketed in North America. Using an overseas version of the fourth-generation Camry as the platform, the Windom adopted a 4-door pillared hardtop body. A newly developed 3.0-liter V6 24-valve engine was transversely placed in a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout, with an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission. The headlamps were of a 4-lamp projector type. Higher grade models featured advanced technologies including the all-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS), the traction control system (TRC), and the vertical g-force sensing TEMS (Toyota Electronically Modulated Suspension).
