The third-generation Prius was introduced in May 2009, preserving the characteristic triangle silhouette of its predecessor. Despite the slightly larger body dimensions, the drag coefficient value further improved to 0.25. In addition to the redesigned THS II hybrid system with a reduction gear, the use of a larger engine (1.8-liter, 2ZR-FXE) and an enhanced 3JM motor gave improved fuel efficiency at high speeds. Toyota's first electric-powered water pump and the exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) system reduced internal friction, delivering the fuel efficiency of 38.0 km/l (under the 10-15 mode test cycle). Improved nickel-metal hydride cells were used for the hybrid battery. A solar-ventilation system, powered by solar cells installed on the roof, was also made available as an option to ventilate the vehicle while parked.

The third-generation Prius was marketed through all four Toyota sales channels and proved enormously successful, assisted in part by the eco car tax incentives that came into effect in April 2009. During the first month after its launch, as many as 180,000 orders were received against the monthly target of 10,000, and the waiting period reached seven months at one point.

The Prius won the 2009-2010 Car of the Year Japan.
