The Origin was placed on the market in November 2000, when Toyota's cumulative domestic vehicle production reached the 100 million mark. The commemorative model represented a fusion of time-honored craftsmanship and state-of-the-art automotive technologies at Toyota. Using the platform and main components of the Progrès, the Origin was painstakingly fitted together by master specialists at Kanto Auto Works who had manned the production line for Toyota's flagship car, the Century. The superb finish of the Origin was proof of their incomparable skills.

The external styling echoed the motif of the 1955 first-generation Crown. The deftly replicated features of the original Crown included the rear-hinged back doors coupled with front-hinged front doors, the front grille design, and vertical tail lamps. Genuine woodgrain panels and leather seats added to the luxury of the interior.

Compared to the Progrès, the body length, width, and height were enlarged by 60 mm, 45 mm, and 20 mm, respectively. Fitted with a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder DOHC VVT-i engine developing 215 PS and a 4-wheel independent double-wishbone/coil suspension, the Origin was priced at seven million yen in Tokyo (excluding government fees/taxes and other charges), about twice as expensive as the base model. Approximately 1,000 units were produced in all.
