The Auris was unveiled in October 2006 as a strategic compact hatchback for Japanese and European markets. Although positioned as a successor to the Corolla Runx/Allex lines, the newly adopted platform extended the width to 1,760 mm, putting the Auris in the large "3 number" car category. The Auris is marketed solely through the Netz sales channel in Japan, and is currently produced in the U.K. and Turkey as well as in Japan.

The Japanese model was initially powered by either a 1.5-liter DOHC 16-valve engine (1NZ-FE) or a 1.8-liter DOHC 16-valve unit (2ZR-FE). In a minor model change in October 2009, the 1.8-liter unit was replaced with the 2ZR-FAE valvematic engine, further improving the environmental performance and fuel efficiency. The new 1.5-liter model also featured improved fuel economy. An RS grade option was added to the 1.8-liter valvematic model, featuring a 6-speed manual transmission for the first time since the MR-S.

In 2010, production of the hybrid Auris started for the first time in Europe at the TMUK plant in Derbyshire, UK.
