The Carina that reached the sixth generation in August 1992 was a 4-door sedan. The existing Surf wagon and van models were discontinued with the release of the Caldina line in November 1992.

The sedan's wheelbase and body height were expanded by 55 mm and 25 mm, respectively, resulting in a more spacious cabin. To focus on the needs for family cars, its high-performance models were discontinued. To the standard front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout models, a 4-wheel-drive (4WD) model was added to serve snowy areas.

All available gasoline engines were of a 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve type, including a 1.5-liter 105 PS "high-mecha" twin-cam unit with a scissors gear, a 1.6-liter 105 PS lean-burn unit, a 1.8-liter 125 PS unit, and a 2-liter 135 PS unit (only for the 4WD model). In addition, a 2-liter 76 PS naturally aspirated diesel engine could be chosen. The 1.8-liter engine was replaced with a newly developed lean-burn 115 PS unit (7A-FE) in August 1994 that offered better fuel economy.
