The Caldina was introduced in November 1992 as the successor to the Carina Surf, by modifying the Carina E Wagon (marketed in Europe) for the Japanese market. It should be noted that the Carina E line was the European version of the tenth-generation Corona (released in Japan in February 1992). The commercial-use Caldina van was also released at the same time.

The Caldina shared basic components with the Corona and the Carina, offering front-engine, front-wheel-drive and full-time 4-wheel-drive (4WD) versions. The available power units all shared the inline 4-cylinder configuration and were transversely-mounted, with DOHC 16-valve scissors gear "high-mecha" twin-cam 1,800 cc 125 PS or 2,000 cc 140 PS (135 PS for the 4WD model) engines for gasoline, and a 2,000 cc naturally aspirated engine for diesel. The Caldina employed a 4-wheel independent MacPherson strut suspension, while the Caldina van used a rigid axle leaf spring suspension system for the rear.

In February 1993, a semi-high-roof option called Sky Canopy was made available along with the standard roof.
