The third-generation Corolla underwent a minor model change in January 1977, when a 2-door coupé was added to the lineup. Its front design was the same as that of the liftback version. With this minor model change, a 1,600 cc 4-cylinder DOHC engine (2T-GEU) was revived after having been pulled from the market to secure compliance with the emission standards. The engine achieved that goal by adding an electronic fuel injection (EFI) system, allowing all Corolla models to meet the 1976 emission standards.

The twin-cam engine coupé offered three grades, including Levin GT, Levin, and SR. They came equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, black mug-style steel wheels, and wide low-profile radial tires.

A "corolla" is the ring of petals around the central part of a flower. The name was intended to evoke the image of a beautifully styled, eye-catching compact car.
