The Corolla FX was fully remodeled in May 1987, along with the Corolla sedan. The second-generation FX featured a steeper back door and a longer roof, with a choice of 3- or 5-door body. The available engines included 1.3-liter, 1.5-liter, and 1.6-liter DOHC units. In addition, the 3-door FX-GT model dubbed a "compact hot hatch" came equipped with the 4A-GE sports twin-cam engine, 6-way sports seats, tires with an aspect ratio of 60, and 4-wheel disc brakes.

A "corolla" is the ring of petals around the central part of a flower. The name was intended to evoke the image of a beautifully styled, eye-catching compact car. The FX subname was derived from the first and last letters of "FF 2-box."
