A "corolla" is the ring of petals around the central part of a flower. The name was intended to evoke the image of a beautifully styled, eye-catching compact car.
While previous Corolla sedans maintained conservative designs to cater to the predominantly middle-aged and senior customers, the ninth-generation model was fully redesigned to create "value for the new century." The renewed platform extended the wheelbase by 135 mm, and the body length, height, and width by 80 mm, 85 mm, and 5 mm, respectively. The width was almost at the upper limit for a "5-number" vehicle. The Corolla's body dimensions were comparable to those of higher grade models including the Allion and the Premio, and were shorter only in the wheelbase and the length.
The DOHC 16-valve VVT-i gasoline engines, including 1.3-liter (2NZ-FE), 1.5-liter (1NZ-FE) and 1.8-liter (1ZZ-FE) units, were all newly developed. Also, an SOHC 8-valve 2.2-liter diesel engine (3C-E) featuring a direct-acting valve train was available. The choice of transmissions included a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic Super ECT. For the rear suspension, a torsion beam system was standard, while 4-wheel-drive models adopted a double wishbone system. The 4-door sedan body with reduced air resistance achieved a drag coefficient of 0.29. At the same time, advanced safety devices including the vehicle stability control (VSC) and traction control systems were also installed for the first time on the Corolla.
