The Crown entered the fourth generation in the full model change in February 1971, and also changed its marque from Toyopet to Toyota. Although the mechanical components were inherited from its predecessor, the body styling was radically different, adopting the unique and progressive spindle-shaped design. The Custom station wagon also adopted this bold styling. Only one model grade was offered, and exterior/interior accessories were virtually the same as those of the Owner Deluxe sedan. The transmission was either a 3-speed automatic with a column/floor shifter, a 3-speed manual with a column shifter, or a 4-speed manual with a floor shifter.
