The eighth-generation Crown made its debut in September 1987. The van model came with either a 2-liter 6-cylinder engine (1G-E) or a 2.4-liter diesel (2L), and the station wagon was fitted with a 2-liter gasoline engine (1G-E or 1G-GZE). Both models featured upgraded accessories. The van offered three model grades (Super Deluxe, Deluxe, Standard), as did the station wagon (Super Deluxe, Super Saloon Extra, Royal Saloon). In a minor model change in August 1990, a 2.5-liter engine version was added to the wagon. A rigid axle coil spring system was employed for the rear suspension.
