Released simultaneously with the Crown Comfort was its sister car, the Comfort, which was designed for use as a small taxi. The wheelbase of the Comfort was 105 mm shorter than that of the Crown Comfort, making its length just within the 4,700 mm limit of the small taxi category at 4,695 mm. Both models were designed to provide plenty of room for the rear seats and luggage compartment, and space was also set aside for installing a taxi meter and a radio transceiver. The Crown Comfort was fitted with the 3Y-PE engine until August 2008, which was then replaced with the 1TR-FPE engine to improve the output from 79 PS to 116 PS. The Super Deluxe model with an inline 6-cylinder DOHC engine (1G-GPE) was available until August 2001. The Crown Comfort won the Good Design Award in the long life design award category in October 2008.
