The third-generation Crown Majesta was released in September 1999, renewing the platform and replacing the pillared hardtop design with a 4-door sedan body. The body height was raised by 35 mm to make the cabin even more spacious and to add stateliness to the external appearance.

The choice of engines included a newly developed D-4 direct injection 6-cylinder 2,997 cc 220 PS unit (2JZ-FSE) and a V8 3,968 cc 280 PS unit (1UZ-FE). Either a rear-wheel-drive or a full-time 4-wheel-drive configuration was available. Newly added to the electronically controlled 4-wheel double wishbone air suspension of higher grade models was a damper control system utilizing the nonlinear H∞ control theory. Preventive safety features included an electronic brakeforce distribution anti-lock braking system (EBD/ABS), an active rear-wheel steering system (ARS), a brake assist system, the vehicle stability control (VSC), and the traction control system (TRC). Collision safety features included the body structure conforming to the GOA collision testing standards, SRS side airbags and curtain shield airbags, and whiplash injury lessening (WIL) front seats. Efforts to enhance clean emissions, fuel economy, recycling, and environmental load reduction were also implemented.

The meaning of "crown" is the same as in English. "Majesta" derives from "majesty."
