The meaning of "crown" is the same as in English. An "estate car" to the British is what Americans call a "station wagon."
All available engines were of the 6-cylinder DOHC type, including 3-liter 220 PS D-4, 2.5-liter 200 PS, and 2.5-liter 280 PS turbocharged units. Standard transmissions were 4- and 5-speed automatic, though a steer shiftmatic system (with buttons on the steering wheel to shift gears manually) was also available with high-end models. A front-engine, rear-wheel-drive was standard, except for the Athlete Four model that featured a full-time 4-wheel-drive configuration. Double wishbone and coil spring independent suspensions were adopted for the front and rear wheels, with the additional sports suspension setup for the Athlete series.
Production of the Crown Estate was discontinued in June 2007 due to the drop in demand for station wagons.
