The meaning of "grand" is the same as in English. "Hiace" combines "high" and "ace," signifying that this vehicle surpasses its predecessor, the Toyoace.
The luxurious design of the Grand Hiace's front grille and rear combination lamps was distinct from Granvia's, although the two models shared the principal mechanical structure and components. The Grand Hiace was available in two body types: one with a sliding door only on the left, and another with sliding doors on both sides. The choice of engines included a 3-liter intercooled turbo diesel unit (1KZ-TE) and a 3.4-liter V6 gasoline engine (5VZ-FE). Either a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout or a 4-wheel-drive layout could be chosen. The 3-liter turbo diesel model came with a 4-speed automatic transmission with a column shifter, and the 3.4-liter gasoline engine model was fitted with a 4-speed automatic transmission with flex lock-up clutch control and a column shifter.
Production of the Grand Hiace was discontinued in May 2002 with the introduction of the Alphard G.
