The second-generation Cynos succeeded the concept of its predecessor, sharing key components including the chassis, engine, and transmission with the three affiliated models (Tercel, Corsa, and Corolla II). The new coupé body featured sharper styling than its predecessor.

The second-generation a (alpha) model was positioned as a more affordable version with a 1,300 cc engine, whereas the β (beta) model continued to carry a 1,500 cc engine. The choice of transmission remained the same, including a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic.

A convertible version was added in October 1996. To build this model, the reinforced body and chassis were sent to ASC (American Sunroof Corporation) in the U.S., where the body was modified into a convertible and sent back to Japan.
