The Model SG truck went into production in February 1952 as a redesigned version of the Model SB. The wheelbase was 2,500 mm, or 100 mm longer than that of the SB, giving more space to the cabin and the bed. The latter became large enough to accommodate a whole tatami mat. The wheel houses in the truck bed were flattened at the top to make loading easier. To further improve the truck's utility, the spare tire was suspended under the bed rather than placed on the bed as with the SB.

As for the chassis, the frame was reinforced to lower the floor while improving rigidity and ride comfort through improved leaf springs and adoption of front shock absorbers. Although the engine output nominally improved only one hp, the adoption of thermostat and many other improvements made the engine more durable and serviceable. The external styling was modernized by embedding the headlamps in the fenders. The front grille design featured six horizontal slits arranged in two columns, possibly inspired by the 1948 Studebaker.
