The fifth-generation Corona that debuted in August 1973 was unique in that it was developed under the philosophy of preventive safety. For instance, the body was designed to absorb the impact of a front- or rear-end collision and mitigate the damage to the cabin. Selected models also featured the so-called OK monitor, a panel with 11 indicators designed to warn the driver of any safety-related irregularities. A large shock-absorbing bumper was also made available as an option.

Three body types were available at first, including a 4-door sedan, a 2-door hardtop, and a 4-door van. A 2-door sedan was added to the lineup two months later in October 1973. Although 2-door sedan styling was popular in the U.S., the Corona 2-door sedan did not sell particularly well in Japan, and it was pulled off the market at the end of the model generation. The 2-door sedan variations included the 1600 Deluxe and the 1600GL (both fitted with a 2T engine), the 1800SR (with 16/16R-B engines), and the 2000SR (with an 18R-E engine).

"Toyopet" : The Toyopet brand name was chosen in a public naming competition. The "corona" is the ring of pearly light around the sun. The name was apt for this robust and approachable family car.
