In September 1978, the Corona was fully remodeled to enter the sixth generation. The most prominent changes in mechanical components were in the newly designed chassis, which featured a MacPherson strut and coil spring independent front suspension and a 4-link and Panhard rod/coil spring rear suspension. All models came with front disc brakes, and high-grade models employed 4-wheel disc brakes. Power steering was available as an option.

The initial body variations included a 4-door sedan, a 2-door hardtop, and a 5-door van. A liftback was added to this lineup in October 1978, becoming the first Corona 5-door hatchback sedan in ten years. Its gently sloping rear with a wide-opening hatch gate was appealing to some users whose hobbies required use of large equipment.

The "corona" is the ring of pearly light around the sun. The name was apt for this robust and approachable family car.
