The second-generation Premio was released in June 2007, retaining the design concept of the previous model and enhancing its unique positioning as a "5 number" sized high-quality 4-door sedan. The body dimensions remained virtually the same as before, while the length and width of the interior were extended by 80 mm and 55 mm, respectively, giving adequate space for an adult passenger in the rear seat to comfortably cross his/her legs. The equipment and accessories were also enhanced. The smart entry & start system was standard-equipped on all models, and a navigation system with the G-Book mX feature was available as an option, which could keep the map data updated via the Internet.

The initial engine lineup consisted of 1.5- and 1.8-liter units, to which a 2-liter valvematic unit (3ZR-FAE) capable of adjusting the valve lifts was added in January 2008. In April 2010, the 1.8-liter engine was also replaced with a valvematic version (2ZR-FAE) to improve driving and environmental performance.
