When the Celica entered the fourth-generation in August 1985, its platform was shared by the newly introduced Carina ED 4-door hardtop and Corona 2-door coupé. The Carina ED proved extremely popular and went into the next-generation model in September 1989, whereas the Corona coupé was discontinued to be replaced by the Corona Exiv, a new sister car of the Carina ED.

The mechanical components of the Corona Exiv were the same as those of the Carina ED, and only the designs of the front grille, front and rear lamps, trims and other details were different. The Corona Exiv shared the platform with the fifth-generation Celica, and offered a choice of engines including the 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve 1,998 cc 165 PS (3S-GE), 1,998 cc 125 PS (3S-FE), and 1,838 cc 105 PS (4S-Fi) units. Advanced electronics were adopted in the mechanical components, including the dual-mode 4-wheel-steering system that allowed the driver to choose between "normal" and "sports" steering modes, and the electronically controlled TEMS suspension (an option for the 2,000 cc engine model). SRS airbags were also available. In a minor model change in August 1990, the 1,838 cc engine was upgraded to the 4S-FE unit with EFI producing 115 PS, and the 3S-FE engine enhanced its output to 140 PS.
