In January 1976, a sporty 2-door wagon was newly added to the Sprinter line as the liftback. The roofline of the 2-door coupé was extended horizontally toward the rear, where a large hatchback door was attached. The backrests of the rear seats could be folded flat to secure spacious luggage space. Only a 1.6-liter engine was available at first, though a 1.2-liter unit was offered a month later in February 1976. In a minor model change in January 1977, the GT model was introduced.
