The Corolla Rumion was launched in Japan in October 2007 as a tall wagon-type compact passenger car. Taking the second-generation Scion xB aimed at the North American market as the base model, the Rumion was modified for use in Japan.

Mounted on the platform shared by the Auris and the Blade, the boxy body of the Rumion measured 4,210 mm in length, 1,760 mm in width, and 1,640 mm in width, and its wheelbase was 2,600 mm long. Its body dimensions were virtually the same as those of the Corolla Spacio, although the width was about 70 mm broader than Spacio and exceeded 1.7 m, which put the Rumion into a larger "5 number" vehicle category. The front suspension used a MacPherson strut system, while the rear suspension employed either a torsion beam system or a double wishbone system. The initial engine lineup consisted of 1.5-liter (1NZ-FE) and 1.8-liter (2ZR-FE) units, and the latter was replaced by a valvematic unit (2ZR-FAE) in a minor model change in December 2009.

The Corolla Rumion was positioned as the successor to the Corolla Spacio that was discontinued in June 2007.

A "corolla" is the ring of petals around the central part of a flower. "Rumion" combines "roomy" and "unique" to represent a car with a spacious cabin and distinctive styling.
