Released in May 1983, the fifth-generation Sprinter (and Corolla) represented a most comprehensive model change in its history. The sedan version followed the worldwide trend and switched its layout from front-engine, rear-wheel-drive (FR) to front-engine, front-wheel-drive. The coupé model was also renovated at the same time as the sedan, though it retained the FR layout to secure sporty driving performance.

The sedan came with 4- and 5-door versions, and the latter came to be referred to as the liftback. The 4-door sedan employed the 6-light window design. The exterior design became more European, featuring a slant nose styling and matching non-standard-shaped headlamps. The front and rear bumpers were made of plastics rather than metal or polyurethane, and were integrated with the body. The fender mirrors were replaced with door mirrors.

A newly designed independent 4-wheel MacPherson strut front and rear suspension was also employed. The transversely mounted engine could be chosen from 1.3-liter SOHC (2A-LU), 1.5-liter (3A-LU), 1.6-liter EFI (4A-ELU), and 1.8-liter diesel (1C-LU) units. The 1.6-liter model adopted an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission for the first time in its vehicle class. In 1985, the 1.3-liter engine was replaced with a 12-valve unit (2E) that was developed for the Starlet. The 1600GT model fitted with a DOHC engine was added to the sedan line in October 1984.
