The sixth-generation Sprinter sedan released in May 1987 was joined by the first van bearing the Sprinter name in August 1988. The Sprinter van was a sibling of the Corolla van that came out a month earlier, and the two models were identical in terms of mechanical structures and components, although the front grille design and emblem were different. The engine lineup consisted of 1.3-liter (2E) and 1.5-liter (3E) gasoline-powered units and a 1.8-liter diesel (1C).
