The Sera was the production model of the AXV-II concept car that was exhibited at the 1987 Tokyo Motor Show. The distinct exterior feature of the Sera was its unique doors that offered a near open-top visibility in all weather conditions, with the top halves of the door glass wrapping around the roof and extending toward the center. The doors had two hinges each, one at the front center of the roof and another at the base of the A-pillar. The doors did not open upwards like true gull-wing doors, but rather up and toward the front. Thus, these doors were more like butterfly wings, although the Sera's brochure described them as gull-wing doors at the time. These doors did not require as much headroom and clearance as gull-wing doors, and consequently presented less trouble when boarding and exiting. The hydraulic dampers that supported the large butterfly doors came with a temperature compensation system to ensure stable opening and closing at all temperatures. The Sera employed the platform of the Starlet, to which a 1.5-liter inline 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve engine was transversely mounted to drive the front wheels, combined with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission with a 2-way overdrive.

"Sera" is derived from a future tense of the French verb "etrĂȘ."The name evokes the image of a dream car that transports us to the future.
