"Celica" is Spanish for "celestial" or "heavenly.""XX" is derived from "unknown quantity."
The exterior was characterized by the long-nose proportions, the front grille with a T-bar motif, and the sculpted horizontal rear combination lamps. Befitting a luxurious high-end specialty car, the top-grade G model could be fitted with optional leather seats by Connolly of the UK. The engine could be chosen from two inline 6-cylinder SOHC units adopted by the Crown: the 2,000 cc M-EU and the 2,600 cc 4M-EU. In a minor model change in August 1980, the fixed axle rear suspension was replaced with a semi-trailing arm and coil spring system, and the 2.6-liter engine was replaced with a 2.8-liter unit (5M-EU).
