Released in June 2004, the Passo was a compact car developed jointly by Toyota and Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. It replaced the Duet as an entry model of Toyota's line of family cars. The Passo's twin was marketed by Daihatsu as the Daihatsu Boon.

Compared to the Duet, the Passo's wheelbase was 70 mm longer, and its width and height were also larger by 65 mm and 85 mm, respectively, making the cabin more spacious. Its minimum turning radius was 4.3 m, which was on a par with that of a maneuverable minicar (keijidosha). Assuming the majority of users to be female, the manufacturer provided a floor tray between the front seats to place a bag on, as well as many storage compartments throughout the cabin. The engine could be chosen from a 989 cc inline 3-cylinder 12-valve unit (1KR-FE) and a 1,297 cc 4-cylinder 16-valve unit (K3-VE), both manufactured by Daihatsu. The 1-liter engine model could be combined with a 4-wheel-drive layout instead of a standard front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout.

"Passo" is Italian for "step." The name conjures up the image of a casual and approachable car.
