The Crown Hybrid was showcased as a concept car in 2007 at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show, and went on sale in May 2008. Its THS II hybrid system was developed specifically for front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sedans. The system combined a 3.5-liter V6 engine (2GR-FSE) producing an output of 218 kW (296 PS) and a torque of 368 Nm (37.5 kgm) with an AC motor producing 147 kW (200 PS) and 275 Nm (28.0 kgm), in order to drive the rear wheels via an electrically controlled continuously variable transmission. The Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery had a nominal output voltage of 288 V. The fuel efficiency was 15.8 km/l (10-15 mode) and 14.0 km/l (JC08 mode).
