A convertible joined the Publica line in October 1963. Although adding an open-top model to an existing line of affordable cars was a fairly common practice in Europe and the U.S., it was still rare in Japan, which made the production of the Publica convertible an ambitious move. Equipped with a twin-carburetor Type U-B engine with an output of 36 PS and a 4-speed transmission with a floor shifter, the Publica convertible could develop a maximum speed of 120 km/h. In December 1966, a detachable top version joined the lineup, replacing the soft top of the convertible with a detachable plastic hardtop.
