Derived from "public" and "car," the name signifies "a car cherished by the public." The name was chosen in a public naming competition that attracted nearly 1.1 million entries.
The truck came in two versions, one with a canvas top and one without. Both versions had a cargo bed measuring 1,270 mm in length and 1,145 mm in width, with the maximum load capacity of 400 kg. The truck without a canvas top was priced at 335,000 yen (in Tokyo), which was the lowest among all Publica models. Its wheelbase was the same as that of the sedan and the van at 2,130 mm, while the body was 60 mm longer than that of the van. The body dimensions of the truck without a canvas top were 3,585 mm in length, 1,415 mm in width, and 1,385 mm in height.
