The second-generation Vista that went on sale in August 1986 introduced a 4-door pillared hardtop and dropped the 5-door liftback. The body dimensions were unchanged from the previous model, except that the body length was extended by 100 mm. In contrast to the sharp and linear design of the first-generation model, the new styling was more rounded. The height of the 4-door hardtop became 25 mm lower than the sedan, attaining a sporty look with wide and low proportions.

The 2-liter model came with a newly developed scissors gear-driven "high-mecha" twin-cam engine (3S-FE), and the GT model with a sports twin-cam engine (3S-GE). The transmission was either a 5-speed manual or an electronically controlled automatic (ECT-S). In addition, a 1.8-liter central injection-type engine (1S-i) and a 2-liter turbo diesel engine were made available. A full-time 4-wheel-drive (4WD) model (with a 5-speed manual transmission) joined the lineup in October 1987, followed by a 4WD model with an automatic transmission in August 1988, equipped with a system to electronically optimize the torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. Also, a turbo diesel (2C-T) version was added to the 4-door hardtop, and the 1.8-liter gasoline engine was upgraded to a "high-mecha" twin-cam version (4S-i).
