The fifth-generation Vista was released in July 1998, becoming independent of the Camry that had been its sister car from the first to the fourth generation, and turning into a model dedicated to the Japanese market. The fifth-generation model renewed its platform and incorporated the most radical change since its debut, dividing itself into two lines: the Vista 4-door sedan and the Vista Ardeo station wagon. The sedan extended its wheelbase and height by 50 mm and 95 mm, respectively, and its cowl at the base of the windshield was moved forward by 125 mm. As a result, the cabin became far more spacious than that of an average "5 number" vehicle. Its styling was exceptionally innovative and sophisticated for a Japanese car.

The engine transversely mounted in the front was either a 1.8-liter VVT-i (130 PS), a 2-liter direct injection D-4 (140 PS), or a 2-liter "high-mecha" twin-cam (135 PS) dedicated to the 4-wheel-drive (4WD) model. The drivetrain configuration was either front-engine, front-wheel-drive or 4WD, and the transmission was a 4-speed automatic with a column shifter. To improve the driving performance and the environmental performance, the 2-liter direct injection engine was replaced with the newly developed 1AZ-FSE 2-liter direct injection engine producing 152 PS in August 2001, and the engine for the 4WD model was also replaced with the 1AZ-FSE in April 2002.

With the introduction of the Avensis in October 2003, production of the Vista was discontinued.
