The Fun Cargo was released in August 1999 as a Vitz-based multi-purpose vehicle with two rows of seats. The front design resembled that of the Vitz, while the roofline, unlike that of the Vitz, kicked up slightly from the front to the rear. The front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FF) model was 180 mm taller than the Vitz, and its wheelbase and length were 130 mm and 250 mm longer, respectively, significantly expanding the cabin space. The low and flat floor, combined with the rear seats that could be stored beneath the front seats, created a large cargo space, in which not only regular bicycles but also large cross-country bicycles could be easily loaded. The middle section of the 3-split rear seats could be removed to enable walkthrough access from the front seats to the cargo room.

The drivetrain configuration was either FF or FF-based full-time 4-wheel-drive (4WD). It shared inline 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve engines with the Vitz, including 1,300 cc 88 PS and 1,500 cc 110 PS units for the FF model and a 1,500 cc 105 PS unit for the 4WD model. The transmission was a 4-speed automatic, although the top-end G grade model came with the steermatic system for shifting gears with buttons on the steering wheel. In a minor model change in August 2002, the front grille and other details were redesigned, and 6:4 split rear seats (which could no longer be stowed under the floor) were installed.

The Fun Cargo won the 1999-2000 Car of the Year Japan with Vitz and Platz.
