"Masterace" is a combination of "master" and "ace," signifying a vehicle that leads a group and excels at what it does. "Surf" means large waves which symbolize the expansiveness of the vehicle's utility.
Neither the Masterace Surf nor the Townace wagon came in a standard roofed body offered by the Townace van, but was only available in a medium- or high-roofed body. A twin moonroof model was also made available. Features of the Masterace Surf's exterior design that differed from those of the Townace included the SAE-compliant rectangular four headlamps and large polyurethane bumpers.
The Masterace Surf was mechanically the same as the Townace. It carried a 1.8-liter carburetor engine (2Y-U) that was developed for new generation of commercial-use vehicles, coupled with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission in a rear-wheel-drive configuration. The front suspension was of a double wishbone and torsion bar spring design, and the rear suspension adopted a 4-link coil spring system with a lateral rod for the first time among Japanese cab-over-engine type wagons. A 2-liter EFI engine (3Y-EU) was made available in February 1984, followed by 4-wheel-drive and turbo diesel models in August 1985. The TEMS (Toyota Electronically Modulated Suspension) became available in August 1988.
Production of the Masterace Surf was discontinued in January 1992.
