The ninth and last generation of the Mark II was released in October 2000. Designed to be a luxurious driver's sedan with superior ride comfort, this model generation replaced the predecessor's hardtop body with a taller 4-door sedan body. This was not so much a revival of the 4-door sedan model that was dropped after the sixth generation, but rather a response to the shift in consumers' focus from stylishness to practicality. The once top-selling hardtop model needed to be replaced with another model suited for the age, and that happened to be a sedan.

The ninth-generation Mark II shared its platform with the 11th-generation Crown (released in September 1999), becoming 60 mm taller than the previous model. All four engines were of inline 6-cylinder DOHC VVT-i design, including 2.5-liter 200 PS direct injection D-4 (1JZ-FSE), 2.5-liter 200 PS (1JZ-GE), turbocharged 2.5-liter 280 PS (1JZ-GTE), and 2-liter 160 PS (1G-FE) units. The standard transmission was either an electronically controlled 4- or 5-speed automatic, and an optional 5-speed manual transmission was available with high-grade models. The drivetrain configuration was either front-engine, rear-wheel-drive or full-time 4-wheel-drive. Both front and rear suspensions used a double wishbone and coil spring system.

In October 2001, the Fortuna Yamaha Power model was added to the line. Jointly developed with Yamaha and designed by Modellista, the Fortuna Yamaha Power came equipped with a souped-up 2.5-liter 300 PS turbocharged engine and a performance-tuned drivetrain.

The various meanings of "Mark" are the same as in English (target, grade, fame). "Corona Mark II" can be taken to mean that the car is both "the second-generation model" and "an upgraded version" of the Corona.
