As the Mark II entered the third generation in December 1976, its 5-door wagon model was also renewed. The wagon adopted a 2-liter engine (16R-J). The transmission lineup was also revamped, which came to include a 5-speed manual transmission with a floor shifter, and a 3-speed automatic with a choice of a column or floor shifter. The column shifter model came with two rows of bench seats, accommodating three persons each for a total of six people. While the sedan line adopted a coil spring rear suspension, the van and wagon employed the rigid axle leaf spring rear suspension.

"Toyopet" : The Toyopet brand name was chosen in a public naming competition. The various meanings of "Mark" are the same as in English (target, grade, fame). "Corona Mark II" can be taken to mean that the car is both "the second-generation model" and "an upgraded version" of the Corona.
