The Mark II van entered the fifth generation in November 1984. Although a commercial-use vehicle, the Mark II van had progressively upgraded its equipment with each new model, reaching a level comparable to the Mark II wagon that was classified as a passenger car. The Standard grade model was dropped with the latest remodeling, leaving only the Deluxe grade and the even more luxurious GL grade.

The engine lineup included a new 1.8-liter gasoline unit (2Y-J) as well as a new 2.4-liter diesel unit (2L). The latter was only available with the Deluxe grade model. The transmission was either a 5-speed manual or a 3-speed automatic (only available with the GL grade gasoline engine model). The leaf spring rear suspension that had been adopted by all previous Mark II vans was finally replaced with a 4-link coil spring system. With the rear seatback stowed, the length and width of the luggage room were 1,720 mm (1,030 mm with the seatback pulled up) and 1,375 mm, respectively, and the payload capacity was 400 kg (250 kg, ditto).

The various meanings of "Mark" are the same as in English (target, grade, fame). "Corona Mark II" can be taken to mean that the car is both "the second-generation model" and "an upgraded version" of the Corona.
