When the first-generation Crown (Model RS) was introduced, a similar model designed for use as a taxi was also released as the Toyopet Master, delivering virtually the same basic performance as the Crown RS. Based on the Toyopet Master, a number of commercial-use vehicles were released under the Masterline brand and proved popular for their passenger car-like ride comfort. The Masterline offered three body types: a light van, a pickup, and a double-cab pickup.

The Masterline was remodeled in March 1959, using the Crown as the base model.
