The Liteace was developed in response to the growth of the market for affordable cab-over-engine trucks (with a carrying capacity of less than one ton). The first Liteace released in November 1970 was a truck with a load capacity of 750 kg and a seating capacity for three, available in two types (high- or low-deck). The Liteace boasted the largest payload capacity and cargo bed in class.

The two unique vertical resin panels, each inset with a headlamp, covered both sides of the front end, extending from just above the bumper to just below the windshield. The 1,166 cc 68 PS water-cooled inline 4-cylinder OHV engine (3K) and other key components were the same as those of the Corolla. A 1-box van (with either three or six seats) and a passenger car-class wagon (with nine seats) were added to the lineup in February 1971. The van and wagon came with a top-hinged back door, and featured distinctive resin panels above the rear combination lamps that matched the ornamental panels in front.

In 1973, a 5-door version with sliding doors on both sides was added to the van, along with a high-roof version of the wagon.
