The third-generation Liteace wagon was launched in September 1985. To improve the stability and ride comfort, the rear suspension was upgraded from a semi-elliptical leaf spring type to a 4-link type with a lateral rod, while also adopting a rack-and-pinion steering system. The body length became slightly shorter than that of the previous model, while the width increased. The wagon offered four body variations, featuring a standard roof, a high roof, a Skylite roof (a high roof with panoramic glass panels), and a high roof for the SW grade model, respectively. The wagon could accommodate five or six people with two rows of seats. The wagon's interior was designed so that the driver's seating position was virtually the same as in a sedan, and selected grade models adopted a fully reclining driver's seat. With some models, the second-row seats could be turned 3-way (forward, sideways, and backward) and the third-row seats could be tumbled sideways to give plenty of luggage space.

The engine lineup included three new units (1,500 cc 70 PS gasoline, 2,000 cc 70 PS diesel, 2,000 cc 82 PS turbo diesel) and an existing gasoline unit (1,800 cc 79 PS). In October 1985, just one month after the launch, a part-time 4-wheel-drive model was added to the model lineup. In a minor model change in August 1988, the front and rear of the vehicle were redesigned, increasing the body length by 75 mm. At the same time, the electronically controlled TEMS suspension was employed for the first time in a 1-box wagon, and the output of the turbo diesel engine was boosted to 85 PS. In September 1989, the new Super SW grade was added, and a 5-door version with sliding doors on both sides was made available with the SW grade model.
