The Lexus LFA started to pre-sale on October 21,2009 and went into production in December 2010 as a super sports car.

The carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque body housed a 4.8-liter V10 unit (LR-GUE) developed jointly with Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd., which produced 412 kW (560 PS)* at 8,700 rpm and 470 Nm (48.9 kgm) at 6,800 rpm, ranking at the top of production car engines in Japan (as of April 2011). This outstanding power was transmitted via a 2-pedal-controlled 6-speed automated sequential gearbox (ASG), and then through the gearbox integrated with the differential (i.e., transaxle) to the rear wheels. To attain the optimal front and rear weight distribution, the engine was positioned in a front midship layout with the transaxle, and the radiator grilles were placed on both sides of the rear end, behind the rear wheels.

The suspension was of a double wishbone type for the front and a multi-link type for the rear, with height adjustable shock absorbers. The brake discs were made of carbon ceramic material. The specifications of tires by Bridgestone were 265/35ZR20 for the front and 305/30ZR20 for the rear. The vehicle weight was trimmed down to 1480 kg through the use of aluminum alloy and CFRP. The body dimensions were 4,505 mm in length, 1,895 mm in width, 1,220 mm in height, and the wheelbase was 2,605 mm. The production volume was limited to 500 units, which were marketed in 56 countries. Of this quantity, 165 units were allocated to Japan and offered at a price of 37.5 million yen.

* The output for the Special Edition was 419 kW (570 PS).
