The name comes from "FJ40" and "Land Cruiser." The FJ40 was a type of Land Cruiser produced between 1960 and 1984.
Built on the chassis of the Land Cruiser Prado, the FJ Cruiser has the styling reminiscent of the FJ40, the model that made the Land Cruiser world-famous. Features that resemble the FJ40 include the front-end design, a near-vertical windshield, a white rooftop, and rear quarter windows that wrap around the corners. The Japanese model comes with a right-hand-drive steering wheel and a side under-mirror, and the lamps are also different from those of overseas models.
Only a 4-wheel-drive (4WD) model with a 4-liter V6 engine (1GR-FE) and a 5-speed automatic transmission is available in Japan, whereas a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive model and a 6-speed manual transmission 4WD model are also available in the U. S. The FJ Cruiser has front-hinged front doors and rear-hinged rear doors with integrated B-pillars, and the rear door does not open unless the front door is opened first. The vehicle is assembled at the Hamura Plant of Hino Motors, Ltd.
