The Avensis is one of Toyota's strategic models for the European market. Its third-generation UK-made station wagon model (second-generation in Japan) was marketed in Japan for a limited period from July to October 2011, through the nationwide Toyota, Toyopet, and Netz sales channels. The third-generation Avensis lineup released in Europe in September consisted of a 4-door sedan and a 5-door wagon, as the 5-door liftback was discontinued.

Although the wheelbase of the third-generation model was unchanged, the front and rear treads were widened by 55 mm and 50 mm, respectively. The body length and width also increased to 4,765 mm and 1,810 mm, respectively, surpassing those of the Mark X Zio.

While the European model came with choices of 3 gasoline and 3 diesel engines, the Japanese model was only available with the 3ZR-FAE 2.0-liter valvematic engine, combined with a CVT transmission and a front-engine, front-wheel-drive configuration. The chassis, which was specifically designed for the European market to achieve sporty handling and improved ride comfort, was also used for the model imported to Japan.

Its safety features included the emergency braking signal system and the intelligent adaptive front-lighting system (AFS): the former flashes all brake lights in case of sudden braking to alert the vehicles coming from behind, and the latter shifts the low beams left or right in line with steering angle and vehicle speed. As is customary with cars for the UK market, the direction indicator lever is located on the left of the steering column and the windshield wiper lever on the right -- the reverse of the normal layout for Toyota cars marketed in Japan.
