With the release of the ninth-generation models in September 2011, all Camry models newly marketed in Japan became hybrids. The THS II hybrid system employing a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine (2AR-FXE) delivers excellent fuel economy at 26.5 km/l (10-15 mode) and 23.4 km/l (JC08 mode) as well as a system output of 151 kw (205 PS), combining the low fuel consumption of a compact car with the output of a 3-liter-class car. The newly designed aerodynamic body (with a drag coefficient value of 0.28) reduces road and wind noises to enhance interior quietness. Advanced safety features include the omni-directional compatibility body structure for collision safety, whiplash injury-lessening (WIL) front seats, and seven SRS airbags.

Two gasoline-powered models are also made available for the U.S. market, where the Camry has been the top-selling car for nine consecutive years. The gasoline engines for these models include a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder unit (2AR-FE) and a 3.5-liter V6 unit (2GR-FE).
