Derived from the Latin word meaning water. The name is meant to evoke an image of clean transparency as well as of something that is universally cherished. Also, the name suggests something fluid and unconstrained -- like free-flowing water -- representing the manufacturer's wish that many people draw plenty of enjoyment from this car.
Although Honda released the Fit Hybrid in October 2010 as the first compact hybrid in the market, the model came with a rather simple hybrid system that relied heavily on its gasoline engine. In contrast, the Aqua has a full-fledged hybrid system that optimally controls the power of a gasoline engine and a motor. The proven technology of the Prius has been further improved for the Aqua, realizing a smaller and lighter system that has attained the world-leading fuel efficiency of 35.4 km/l in the JC08 test cycle and 40.0 km/l in the 10-15 test cycle. In comparison, the fuel efficiency of the Fit Hybrid is 26.0 km/l in the JC08 test cycle and 32.6 km/l in the 10-15 test cycle, and that of the Prius is 30.0 km/l in the JC08 test cycle and 38.0 km/l in the 10-15 test cycle.
The Aqua comes in a 5-door hatchback body. Its measurements are 3,995 mm in length, 2,550 mm in wheelbase, and 1,695 mm in width, which are smaller than those of the 3rd Prius by 485 mm, 150 mm, and 50 mm, respectively. The Aqua is also lighter than the Prius by 260 kg (comparison based on basic models). The Aqua delivers a maximum output of 73 kw (100 PS) by combining a 1.5-liter 54 kW (74 PS) engine and a 45 kW (61 PS) motor. The hybrid battery has been downsized for placement under the rear seat, resulting in a spacious cargo area of 305 liters (note: the figure refers to storage up to the top of the rear seat back calculated by Toyota using the VDA method). The starting price of the Aqua is 1.69 million yen (in contrast to 2.17 million yen for the Prius and 1.59 million yen for the Fit Hybrid).
