Means "gate" in French. The car was given this name because of its wide-opening sliding door.
The shape and size of the body were basically unchanged, keeping up the look of the first-generation model. The large and remote-controlled passenger-side sliding door was retained, along with the low floor. Two-wheel-drive models featured a flat floor to make it even easier for passengers to enter and exit the vehicle.
Unlike its predecessor, the second-generation model came with a rear door on the driver's side, vastly improving the vehicle's utility. To reduce obstruction of the driver's view, the driver-side door mirror was mounted to the door panel, and the front A-pillars were slimmed down. With a touch of playfulness, a scale was marked on the left B-pillar for measuring children's height.
The engine for 1.3-liter models was replaced with the newly designed 1NR-FE fitted with the Dual VVT-i system. The 1.5-liter engine (1NZ-FE) was upgraded and coupled with Super CVT-i, attaining a smooth ride with shock-free gear shifting and low fuel consumption. As a result, the 1.5-liter 2-wheel-drive model with idling-stop feature attained a fuel efficiency of 20.6 km/l under the JC08 test cycle.
Coinciding with the release of the redesigned Porte, its sister model Spade was launched through the Corolla and Netz sales channels, making Toyota's compact minivans available through all four of Toyota sales channels.
